Labour Minister Accelerates Rehabilitation for Victims after Flooding

         Labour Minister emphasizes for all departments under the Ministry of Labour to help those affected by the "Podul" and "Kajiki" tropical storm. He also reiterated to enjoin units under the Ministry of Labour to mobilize officials and assist affected establishments, employees, insurers, and people, following the mission to keep up with the situation. The mission’s plan is split into 3 phases, before, during and after the disaster occurs, to expedite assistance of victims after the flood.

         On September 24, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul reported that the flooding caused by the "Podul" and "Kajiki tropical storm had affected many provinces in the north and northeast region, resulting in the suffering of many people. The government, by the Ministry of Labour, has showed concern for the people in the affected areas. In terms of guidelines for rehabilitation and assistance for flood victims, the Ministry of Labour has prepared a plan for restoration, especially target groups, workers, employees, employers, and the general public. Before disasters occur, the people are provided with technical knowledge for the benefit of disaster prevention and mitigation. During the disaster, the ministry examines the information of affected workers to offer help, protect, and claim legal rights. In the rehabilitation phase, the ministry prepares vocational training and recruitment services for victims.
         M.R. Chatumongol further said that from the said flooding situation in the 12 provinces, 113 establishments were affected by a total of 35,058, and 13,781 employees from a total of 389,155. The agencies under the Ministry of Labour have aided during the flooding opening up building areas within the Institute/Office of Skill Development to be a temporary shelter for flood victims, providing survival bags and supporting the royal kitchen in collaboration with the provinces and agencies in the area.
         Later measures will be in the rehabilitation phase after the water recedes, which will help the people, employees, and workplaces with 3 important measures, which are 1) Issuing a notification requesting cooperation from establishments for employees to take leave without formally taking leave from their entitlements, or being an offense to work regulations 2 ) Urgent employment and skill development projects by supporting income, including materials and vocational training equipment to alleviate career distress and rehabilitate public places to provide continuous income for the people to sustain life after the water recedes and wait for rehabilitation, and 3) Set up a unit to service electrical appliances and small engines for agriculture to reduce the public expense of damaged electrical equipment, including checking the safety of electrical wiring in houses.
         Establishments, employees, insurers, and people affected by the "Podul" and "Kajiki" tropical storm can request help at all departments of the Ministry of Labour nationwide, or call the Ministry of Labour’s 1506 hotline, 24 hours a day.
