BFUN Meets with Labour Minister to Assist Bank Employees from the Merger of Thanachart and TMB

Date:
Friday, 27 September 2019

The Banks and Financial Institutions Labour Unions Network met with the Labour Minister to discuss the merger of Thanachart Bank with TMB Bank, as employees from both banks are concerned about layoffs. The Labour Minister ordered the relevant agencies to take care of the employees in the case of terminations.

On September 27, 2019, at 10.00 hours, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol and committee, welcomed President of the Banks and Financial Institutions Labour Unions Network (BFUN) Mr. Vitit Sirisuwan and committee, who requested to meet and discuss the impact of the merger of TMB Bank with Thanachart Bank. The meeting took place at the Labour Minister’s meeting room, 6th floor, Ministry of Labour. Mr. Vitit said that the merger of Thanachart Bank and TMB Bank caused employees from both banks to be concerned about their futures and job security. They questioned whether after the merger was complete, if employees would continue to be employees of the banks or not, including employment conditions after the merger. The concerns arose from terminations of employment and redundancies in both banks. Thus, the network met with the Labour Minister to find ways to resolve problems that could occur from the merger of Thanachart Bank and TMB Bank, to prevent violations against employees and potential direct and indirect pressures on employees.

The Labour Minister acknowledged the requests and instructed the relevant agencies to inspect the said facts to prepare for cases of terminations.

The Permanent Secretary of Labour said that if terminations occur, it will be in the authority and duties of the Ministry of Labour care for the affected bank employees to have full legal rights and protection and prepare assistance measures following the ministry’s missions. In addition, the ministry will coordinate with the Bank's management to understand guidelines for treating the employees regarding the status of the employees in the future.
