Labour Minister Commences Career Fair in Surat Thani to Promote Employment in Southern Provinces

          The Ministry of Labour commenced the “Southern Thailand Career Fair” in Surat Thani. preparing the workforce for the future and boosting the professional potential of people in the area.

          On January 13, 2020, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul presided over the opening ceremony of the “Southern Thailand Career Fair” at Surat Thani Hall, 4th floor, Central Plaza Surat Thani. Assistant to the Labour Minister Mr. Duangrit Benjathukul Chairungrueng, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol and the Department of Skill Development’s Director-General Mr. Tawat Benchatikul also joined the event. Surat Thani Provincial Governor Wichawut Jinto gave a welcoming and the Department of Employment’s Deputy Director-General Mrs. Thienrat Nawamawat gave a report. The Labour Minister said that the southern region has a high potential for development as a new economic base that will drive the country’s economic growth, as there are good foundations in terms of location linked to countries in ASEAN and South Asia. The region also has economic and social foundations, coupled with an abundance of natural resources. The government recognizes the areas potential; thus the southern region has been established as the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC), which will be a prototype for new economic areas within the country with balanced natural resources and environmental management, promoting long-term development sustainability, gross domestic product, tourism, and industrial investment. This will further promote a high-tech industry and an economic gateway linking South Asia and the EEC. People in the area will have opportunities to explore a variety of careers, earn a better income and live a better quality of life, and be proud of cultural values ​​and local wisdom.

          M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul further said that with the potential of the southern region and the government’s SEC development direction, it can be predicted that work trends and occupations of the southern population will gain good results, especially the service sector in hotels, tourism, agriculture and high-tech industries. The developments will also contribute to the promotion of local knowledge. Therefore, the event today is a response to the preparation of both the workforce in the future and the enhancement of the people’s career potential as well. The Labour Minister thanked all sectors for participating in the event to open the world about work and careers to the people. He asked that participants apply their knowledge and experience in planning for further studies and careers to help develop the country, following the country’s vision for Thailand’s stability, prosperity, and sustainability, to become a developed country based on the philosophy of the sufficiency economy.

          The activities in the event consisted of providing opportunities for people to apply directly to companies. There were 23 companies, 1,575 vacancies, product demonstration, and sales. Participants had the opportunity to meet with 25 employers/companies, including financial institutions, namely the Government Savings Bank and Krung Thai Bank which gave advice on funding sources. There were opportunities to practice 20 different professions and a seminar on sparking career success by speakers from 4 teams and also on a career towards the world of innovation by Dr. Somporn Petchsong, Chairman of the Education Organization of Surat Thani and a group from the Chamber of Commerce and Surat Thani Provincial Industry Office. Information was provided about working in a foreign country through the IM Japan program by speakers who participated in the project and applied their knowledge and experience to run a successful business in Thailand. Services were also provided by agencies under the Ministry of Labour, with royal musical performances of King Rama IX from the mini-orchestra of students of Sarasas Wiset School, Surat Thani.
