Labour Minister Concerns About Floods in the South; Instructs Agencies to Help Workers and Organizations

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin instructed provincial agencies in the south that have been affected by the floods to expedite mobilization to aid and care for workers, organizations, and people to alleviate distress and provide occupational support and the water subsides.

          On January 11, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin reported the flooding in many provinces in the south, causing suffering among many people. He said that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha, and the Ministry of Labour under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, is concerned about the workforce and the general public suffering from the floods. He has instructed agencies in the areas concerned to aid the people urgently, including moving, evacuating, accelerating drainage, delivering things to alleviating troubles, and providing public relations to create continuous awareness of the flood. In the Ministry of Labour’s part, the Labour Minister has monitored the situation closely and has instructed the agencies in each affected province to expedite assistance and care for workers and the people in need, to provide necessities for their living.

          Mr. Suchart continued that the Ministry of Labour has instructed agencies in the area to inspect and monitor any deaths that occur from the flood to provide compensation and benefits under the Social Security Act. He has also instructed the rehabilitation and support for occupation and employment, including repair services for homes, home appliances, and small agricultural engines, including career training and care for the victims in terms of social security rights under labour protection laws after the water subsides. The Yala Provincial Labour Office’s government officials and staff have joined together to prepare sticky rice with fried chicken to distribute to victims together with government agencies, media, and volunteers in Yala. In addition, the district labour volunteers have been assigned to monitor and report the situation regularly. If workers, employers, employees, and the general public who are affected by the situation can contact the departments under the Ministry of Labour in the area for assistance or contact the Ministry of Labour’s 1506 hotline.
