Labour Minister Visits Chiang Rai to Develop Logistics Workforce

Content Description

The Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, traveled to Chiang Rai province to visit a specialized training center in logistics to plan strategies to develop workers to support the country’s transportation industry.
On January 26, 2023, the Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, and the Ministry of Labour’s executives traveled to Chiang Rai province to visit a towing driving technique training course (hazardous substance transport) at the International Skill Development Institute, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. The Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour and Acting Director-General of the Department of Skill Development, Ms. Bubpha Rueangsud, the Ministry of Labour’s executives and staff in relevant agencies in Chiang Rai Province, gave a welcome.
The Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin said that the logistics industry is very important to the country’s development after the COVID-19 pandemic began to improve. It helps in supporting economic activities, whether in the manufacturing or the service sector, including in the delivery of products to consumers. In addition, the logistics industry helps reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of business operators. Today’s visit was intended to observe the training of the specialized training center in logistics. It is located in the International Skill Development Institute in Chiang Rai, which is famous for producing workers for the transportation industry. From the report in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, 1,590 people completed training from the institute, and 1,120 people were employed. Workplaces are recruiting various positions such as truck drivers transporting dangerous goods with an average monthly income of 35,000 Baht, forklifts drivers for less than 10 tons, with an average monthly income of 30,000 Baht, pier crane drivers with a size of 45 tons, with an average monthly income of 32,000 Baht, and forklifts drivers for over 10 tons, with an average monthly income of 25,000 Baht.
Mr. Suchart continued that today, he had the chance to observe the training and therefore wanted to encourage the trainees in the towing driving technique training course (hazardous substance transport). Driving a trailer requires skill and expertise. Therefore, it is a job position that is difficult to recruit people. Thus, those trained or able to drive this vehicle will not lose their jobs. This training is a collaboration with the private sector, sending employees who are trainee drivers. Once the training is over, companies will recruit them to work immediately. For those who are unemployed, after completing training, there will be companies interviewing them and employing people who have passed the training. The Labour Minister emphasized that the Department of Skill Development uses this approach, that is to prepare supporting positions and provide skills training to meet the needs of business establishments. Those who pass the training will have a job immediately. The effort follows the government’s policy under the leadership of the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, to provide skilled workers with a career and income to take care of their families. In 2023, the goal is 2,750 people nationwide.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour and Acting Director-General of the Department of Skill Development, Ms. Bubpha Rueangsud, added that for this training, participants learned both theory and practice about occupational safety, health, and the working environment. They also learned the necessary laws and regulations on driving a trailer with accessories. In addition, they received training from the Chiang Rai Provincial Transport Office and a truck driving practice test to obtain a driver’s license for towing other vehicles or wheel transport (Type T3) and (Type T4). In 2023, the International Skill Development Institute aims to carry out logistics training for 500 people.
Between 2021-2022, the International Institute worked with the Chiang Rai Provincial Transport Office to develop public bus drivers for tour buses to enhance driving skills for maximum safety for all passengers and road users. Business establishments sent over 100 drivers to train with the institute. Those interested in logistics can apply for training at the International Skill Development Institute, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, or ask for more information at the Ministry of Labour 1506 hotline, press 4.
