Labour Minister Shows Concern for Laotian Worker Who Lost Three Fingers from a Log Cutter and Orders Agencies to Expedite Assistance Following the Procedures

          The Labour Minister showed concern for the Laotian worker who experienced an accident while working in Samut Prakan. A log cutting machine had cut off three fingers from the left hand. According to the procedure, the Labour Minister instructed the officers of affiliated agencies to investigate facts and expedite assistance in obtaining compensation benefits.
          On October 20, 2020, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin spoke about the case of a Laotian employee who had an accident at work as a log cutter cut his left three fingers in Samut Prakan. He said that the government, under Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha, cares for employees who suffer from work hazards. Although this case involves an injured foreign worker, the government is still offering full support as all workers are major cogs in driving the country’s economy. The worker came to work in Thailand legally and will be protected according to human rights principles. In which the various benefit, particularly the social security benefits, will provide the same protection as Thai workers.
          Mr. Suchart said that he had instructed departments under the Ministry of Labour in the area to take care of the injured worker to know his benefits and protection coverage according to the law. The audit by the Social Security Office and the Samut Prakan Provincial Labour Protection and Welfare Office found that the case of Mr. Sitthiporn Boonmee, a Laotian employee, had a valid work permit. Has worked with a company, receiving wages of 331 Baht per day. On June 18, he suffered from an accident at work with a woodcutter, cutting the ends of his index, middle, and ring fingers from his left hand. However, the company did not report social security registration with the Office of Employment. Mr. Sitthiporn was hospitalized at Bang Phli Hospital. His treatment has ended already, whereby the employer was responsible for the medical expenses. At present, the employer asked the employee to leave his job.
          Agencies under the Ministry of Labour in Samut Prakan province has assisted. Mr. Sitthiphon filed a petition to the Samut Prakan Labour Protection and Welfare Office on September 24, in which the Samut Prakan Provincial Social Security Office, Bang Phli Branch, has taken action and inquired facts for compensation diagnosis. This comprises medical expenses, time off and dismemberment expenses, and an employee’s appointment to assess organ loss with the Medical Sub-Committee, Unit 1 At the Social Security Office, Samut Prakan Province, on Thursday, October 22, to pay compensation benefits. On October 21, the agency will visit the company to verify all employees’ registration and assess whether the operation is legitimate. The Samut Prakan Provincial Employment Office will inspect foreigners’ work in the workplace, and the Samut Prakan Provincial Labour Protection and Welfare Office will also conduct a safety inspection within the following week.
