The Ministry of Labour’s Spokesperson, Mr. Phumiphat Mueanchan, said that the Labour Minister, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has instructed the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare and related agencies to follow up on the resolution of the case of 700 Myanmar migrant workers who gathered to demand unpaid wages from their Chinese employers in the Rojana Industrial Estate, Prachin Buri Province on August 16. Initial investigations by the Ministry of Labour found that the problem was caused by the delay in the inspection process and the international money transfer from the parent company in China. Labour inspectors and company representatives discussed and paid employees 500 Baht each to alleviate their hardships on August 17, 2024. The company promised to improve financial supervision by paying wages in cash and having company representatives oversee them systematically, starting from August onwards. The payment date has been set for August 21, 2024, at the construction site. On July 9, 2024, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Pairoj Chotikasathien, spoke about the case of the 2nd Wage Committee and a group of five people from the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry who submitted a petition to the Ombudsman requesting an investigation into the performance of his duties as it was observed that the meeting minutes of the 22nd Wage Committee Meeting No. 5/2024 on May 14, 2024, violated labour protection laws. This is because in the minutes of the meeting, there was a resolution to adjust the formula for calculating the new minimum wage to 400 Baht, and it was seen that the consideration of adjusting the said wage rate formula was a consideration that did not comply with Section 87 of the Labour Protection Act B.E. 2541.
