Labour Minister Clarifies That Over 80 Percent of New Graduates Are Employed and Affirms the Statistics From the Social Security Data

          On December 19, 2022, the Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, spoke about the case where Associate Professor Dr. Yongyut Chalamwong, Consultant to the Thailand Development Research Institute or TDRI, gave an interview to the media saying that one million Thai youths are unemployed and that the government should dedicate more budgets to support education for faculties that the market needs to motivate children to study in these disciplines to drive the labour market in our country so that there is no shortage. Factually, according to the Social Security Office, there were 1,193,376 new graduates from 2020 to 2022. The social security registration database shows that 957,900 graduates are employed and listed, representing 80.27 percent. Each year, hundreds of thousands of new graduates enter the Social Security System under Section 33. The rest will turn to self-employment, enter the international job market or continue studying in the country or overseas.

          Mr. Suchart continued that the Ministry of Labour has continued to implement measures to promote employment, such as the co-payment project, which hired 56,492 new graduates, the “thaimeengarntum” platform, which employed 294,916 people, the SMEs employment promotion project, which employed 57,036 new insured persons, and the Factory Sandbox project which employed 48,716 new, insured persons. In addition, there is also government employment from the loan decree and annual budget. At the same time, the Ministry of Labour is also conducting skills training for careers to support the expansion of the tourism and service sector, such as Thai food entrepreneur courses, Halal food cooks, Thai massage and spa workers, bartenders, boat attendants, maintenance technicians, and drivers, focusing on training in areas related to tourism and services such as Phuket, Chonburi, Rayong, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Bangkok. The Ministry of Labour has also assigned the Department of Employment to conduct matching to job positions based on the knowledge, ability, and skills of new graduates to graduate and be able to get a job in establishments immediately. They have also organized work meetings in each province throughout the country continuously.

          “The government’s results under the leadership of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has reopened the country and driven various policies, has made the economy recover faster. There is an increase in employment, and new graduates and people who want to find work are gradually entering the system. Due to the situation of COVID-19 easing, as a result, more tourists have returned to travel in Thailand,” concluded Mr. Suchart.
