On 18 January 2017, Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul joined the ministry’s’ executive committee meeting to follow up progress on labour reformation which comprises 8 agendas. As progress was found to be behind the set timeline, the Labour Minister urged all units to accelerate operations. Participants concluded operations over the past 3 months and plans for the next 3 and 6 coming months.
The meeting’s outcome concluded 3 directions starting with a labour reform group which will coordinate, monitor and support information and report progress on reformation agendas from affiliated units centrally and regionally. The second direction includes the establishment of 3 working committees comprising a committee on organizational reform, a committee of good governance and people development efficiency, and another committee on labour law reformation. The three committees will work towards unifying labour management and elevate labour standards to internationally recognized levels. The third and last direction was on the formulation of a framework to support the 8 reformation agendas for 2017. This includes reformation on promotion of employment, labour protection and inspection, labour management, productivity and services, social security, benefits and labour rights, foreign worker management, support of analytical information on policies and action plans, integration of labour technology, promotion of workplace safety and hygiene and management of all labour-related funds.
The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai Uthaipatanacheep said, “The Ministry of Labour has urged foreign worker management and structural reformation to be the top priorities. The effects will trickle down and result in more effective management within the ministry.”
