MOL Coordinates with Labour Ambassador and Immigration in Repatriating 4-Month Pregnant Burmese Worker Home After Unemployment from COVID-19

                The Ministry of Labour’s spokesperson spoke about the case of 30-year-old Myanmar migrant workers who was 4 months pregnant and experiencing unemployment. The company she worked for had closed from the COVID-19 situation and she did not have an income. The worker turns to the Ministry of Labour for help on May 13. Most recently, the Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand, the Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office and the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Employment Office have organized travels from Mo Chit bus station to Mae Sot border checkpoint in Tak province, for the worker to return to Myanmar.

                On May 25, 2020, at 17.00 hours, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat as the Ministry of Labour’s spokesperson, along with the staff Nakhon Pathom Employment Office and Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office visited the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) in Chatuchak, Bangkok, to facilitate the repatriation of a migrant worker, back to their country of origin. The worker, Ms. Wah Thuay, 30, who is now 4 months pregnant, had asked for help from the Ministry of Labour to coordinate with related agencies to send her back to her home country and return to her husband and relatives. She had become unemployed as the company she worked for shut down, as a result of the COVID-19 virus spread. She had no job and no income and was living with friends near the company she worked for in Sam Phran, Nakhon Pathom. Previously, her husband had returned to Myanmar to renew his work permit, but due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, he was unable to travel back into Thailand.

                Mrs. Theanrat said that as soon she was aware of the matter, the Ministry of Labour took action. The ministry gives importance to all workers who come to work in Thailand, taking into account human rights principles to receive equal protection rights under labour law. The Ministry of Labour coordinated with the Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand, the Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office and the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Employment Office since May 13, in order to provide assistance in facilitating documentation and travel procedures for this Myanmar migrant worker. Today (May 25, 2020), the Ministry of Labour, by the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Employment Office, the Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office, and relevant departments, took Ms. Wah Thuay, to the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) and paid for the traveling expenses for her to get on a tour bus from Bangkok to Mae Sot border checkpoint, Tak province, so that she can travel to Myanmar. After that, she will enter the process of containment following the measures set by Myanmar authorities. After the quarantine period is complete, the Myanmar authorities will take her home to her husband and relatives.
