MOL Joins MOU with 7 Agencies to Form Measures and Guidelines on Detaining Children in Immigration Dentation Centers Before Return

             On January 21, 2019, at 10.00 hours, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prawit Wongsuwan presided over the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the formation of measures and guidelines for detaining children in immigration detention centers to await return to origin countries. The meeting took place at the Santimaitree Building (outer building), Government House. The MOU signing ceremony was a collaboration between 7 government agencies, namely the Royal Thai Police Office, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour. The objective of the MOU is to determine the duties, responsibilities and guidelines for all relevant agencies to systematically and efficiently care for and not detain children in immigration detention rooms. On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prawit Wongsuwan and Advisor to the Labour Minister Police General Suwat Chanttikun were witnesses, together with representatives from various government agencies. The Ministry of Labour’s signatory was Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark. The MOU is considered an effort and commitment of the Thai government to help and protect children by studying the best interests of children.
