MOL Supports 4-Month Pregnant Worker Unemployed from COVID; Works with Myanmar Ambassador to Support Return Home

Content Description

The Ministry of Labour’s spokesperson revealed support for a migrant worker aged 30 years, and 4 months pregnant, experiencing unemployment problems with no income due to the company shutdown from COVID-19. The Ministry of Labour has coordinated with Myanmar’s Labour Ambassador to Thailand, Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office and Nakhon Pathom Provincial Employment Office to facilitate her return home following the process at the Mae Sot border checkpoint in Tak.

On May 13, 2020, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat spoke about the case of one migrant worker from Myanmar who was 4 months pregnant, and asked for help from the Ministry of Labour, as she became unemployed as her company shutdown from the spread COVID-19 virus. She had asked for help to return to her home country. From an initial data check, the worker’s name was Ms. Wawa Thuay, 30 years old, who had been working at the company for 4 years; she had been working with legal documents. Ms. Wawa was currently living with friends near the place of work in Sam Phran, Nakhon Pathom.

Previously, the husband of Ms. Wawa Thuay, traveled back to Myanmar to renew his work permit. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to return to Thailand. Meanwhile, Ms. Wawa Thuay, a Burmese migrant worker and 4 months pregnant, suffered from unemployment due to the virus, which left her with no job and no income. She has no relatives living in Thailand and therefore needed help in returning to Myanmar to see her husband and relatives.

Mrs. Theanrat said that the Ministry of Labour highly considers human rights and equality of migrants who come to work in Thailand. It has most recently coordinated with Myanmar’s Labour Ambassador to Thailand, Nakhon Pathom Immigration Office, and the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Employment Office to provide assistance in facilitating documents and travel procedures for the said foreign workers. The officers will take her to Mae Sot border checkpoint in Tak province to send back to her home country and follow the next processes.
