Narumol Reports Progress on Skills Development for Over 4.7M Workers to Drive the Nations Economy

                The Deputy Labour Minister reported the number of workers who have passed skills training in the past year, accelerating forward to raise the workforce’s standard, driving the country’s economy.

                On September 25, 2020, Deputy Labour Minister Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat reported the Department of Skill Development’s performance for the 2020 fiscal year, with the set target of 3,827,200 people. A total of 4,728,485 people has gone through skills development, consisting of 136,882 people. The DSD conducted training for and 4,591,603 people through encouraging organizations under the Skill Development Promotion Act B.E. 2545 and amendment No. 2, B.E. 2557. In the DSD portion, there are many interesting projects such as the logistics personnel development project in collaboration with the Thai International Freight Forwarders Association (TIFFA), with 323 new graduates from the undergraduate level, training, and entering the logistics market. The DSD also has a project to enhance workers’ skills in the Special Economic Development Zones totaling 12,462 people, the project for the training center of excellence in advanced technology totaling 10,710 people, the project for specific target groups to improve professional opportunities totaling 11,518 people, consisting of people who have gone through drug treatment, young detainees, people with disabilities and their caregivers, informal workers, enlisted soldiers before discharge and workers under the Royal Initiative Project. It has also produced the productivity enhancement project to have an average increase of labour productivity by 40.09%, reduce losses in the production or service cycle by 40.38 percent, creating economic value totaling over 433 million Baht, developing skills for employees in the workplace to have higher potential totaling 15,879 people and creating 258 labour productivity developers of the Department of Skill Development.

                In addition, the DSD conducts a labour skill standard assessments to support the standard wage rate. It has already announced wage rates according to skill standards for 83 occupations, where people who pass the skill standard test at each level will receive the wage rate according to their skill standards. The maximum is 900 Baht, which is in holistic health promotion, western spa (nutrition therapy), at the level 2 capability.

                Prof. Narumon added that currently, 140,330 people had passed the certification (as of September 21, 2020), consisting of 136,466 indoor electricians, 3,286 technicians for home and small commercial air conditioners, and a total of 578 welders. The Department of Skill Development (DSD) has a center for assessing knowledge and competence in all provinces.

                “The Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development has carried out skills development initiatives, in response to government policy. It aims to create a quality workforce to meet the labor market’s needs in both the private and industrial sectors. Doing so will raise the level of workers’ skills to be quality workers, having a skill level that passes the labour skill standards to receive a higher wage rate. As such, workers will be able to perform their duties properly and with safety for clients. The efforts also provide workers in vulnerable groups to have access to skill development, to increase career opportunities so that everyone can have a job, reducing social disparities and leading to the overall economic drive for the nation,” said the Deputy Labour Minister.
