On October 11, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin presided over the handover ceremony of floating toilets to help people affected by floods, with two houses in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, one house in Lop Buri, and two houses in Chainat Province. The occasion took place on the first floor of the Ministry of Labour’s building. Assistant to the Labour Minister Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong, the Labour Minister’s Advisor, Mrs. Thiwalrat Angkinan, Secretariat to the Labour Minister Mr. Suthep Chitayawong, the Ministry of Labour’s Spokesperson (on politics) Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong, the Department of Skills Development’s Director-General Mr. Prateep Songlamyong and the Ministry of Labour’s executives also joined the occasion. Mr. Suchart said that Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha and Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan is concerned and has instructed the Ministry of Labour, which is a unit that helps workers and the people, to support those affected by tropical storms which have caused flooding in the northeastern and central regions.

Mr. Suchart went on to say that the Ministry of Labour has measures to rehabilitate workers after the flood recedes. He has instructed the Ministry of Labour’s agencies to organize various activities, including the Office of the Permanent Secretary or Labour, organize urgent employment and skill development projects that support compensation, and provide professional training materials for continuous income. The Department of Employment will provide employment and occupational promotion services. The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare will provide advice on rights under the labour protection laws. The Social Security Office will take care of benefits for the victims according to their social security rights. It will organize a team of doctors and nurses from hospitals in the network to provide initial care services. Additionally, the Department of Skills Development opened a volunteer kitchen to prepare lunch boxes and services to check the safety of the wiring in households and repair services for motorcycles and agricultural tools.

Agencies within the DSD, including the Institute of Skill Development and the Office of Skill Development, organized the DSD’s volunteering for society project activities in building floating toilets to help people affected by floods for a total of 77 units. Today, they were delivered to support people in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, and Chainat Provinces, totaling five units. In addition, materials and equipment have been supported by skill development networks such as Home Product Center PCL, CRC Thai Watsadu Co., Ltd., and SCG Foundation, which donated 300 sets of mobile sanitaryware. Hiran S. Sewee Co., Ltd., and Vanda Pack Co., Ltd. gave 52 multi-purpose fiberglass boats to help flood victims on this occasion too.

After the water recedes, the DSD will organize training courses to educate flood victims. Example courses include reparations on household equipment and appliances so that the victims can bring the household equipment or home appliances flooded to use for training. Equipment that can be repaired will help the trainees have the knowledge and save costs as they do not need to send the device for repair or buy a new one. Courses include training in small engine mechanics for agriculture and masonry-plastering. The courses take only 3-5 days of training, so trainees can practice on their own. For more information, contact the Institute of Skill Development or the Office of Skill Development in all locations nationwide, concluded the Labour Minister.
