The Labour Minister commenced the 9th Abilympics Thailand 2019, which was participated by 222 people with disabilities, selected for 20 races on April 24-25 at Impact Muang Thong Thani Building 6. The competition enables people with disabilities to develop skills, gain careers, increase competitiveness, create equality and improve their quality of life.
On April 24, 2019, Labour Minister H.E. Police General Adul Sangsingkeo chaired the commencement of the 9th Abilympics Thailand 2019 at Impact Muang Thong Thani Building 6. He said that the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development implemented the 20-year national strategy in building competitive capabilities in human resource development and creating equal opportunities across society. The Ministry of Labour has given importance to this and has policies that offers people with disabilities the opportunity to develop their professional skills and showcase the potential to drive the country firmly and sustainably and raise the level of people with disabilities to be accepted both at home and abroad.
Pol.Gen. Adul said that people with disabilities are essential to the Thai workforce and are valuable resources of the country which requires continuous development. The Abilympics Thailand is an activity that promotes, supports and encourages people with disabilities to have a love of work and career, and is interested in learning, training and developing their skills to meet standards. Furthermore, it creates opportunities for people with disabilities to have equal access to development and reduce inequality seamlessly.
Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark reported the objectives of the Abilympics Thailand and that the Department of Skill Development is the leading agency in collaboration with other agencies related to people with disabilities, organizing competitions to promote and support people with disabilities to develop their professional skills and raise skill standards to reach international standards as an upgrade of the economic and social status of people with disabilities. The competition also provides opportunities for people with disabilities to showcase their ability to be accepted by the general public and allow society to see the value of talent and give opportunities for professional careers.
The competition had a total of 20 skill categories. On April 24, 2019, there were 10 skill categories, namely, sewing, computer assembly, silk colouring, inventing items from waste materials, studio photography, tailoring basic women’s clothing, publications and architectural designs using computer programs, webpage design and crochet. On April 25, 2019, the 10 skill categories were basket weaving, electronic circuit board assembly, draw and paint, pottery, character design, tailoring men’s clothing, poster design, industrial design using computer programs, using Microsoft Work for printing and knitting. Two hundred twenty-two contestants passed the first qualifying round by 12 Skill Development Institutes nationwide whereby the results will be announced and awarded to the winners of the competition on April 26.
