The Labour Minister visited establishments in Nakhon Ratchasima province to observe models of Good Labour Practices or GLP, to improve the quality of life of workers following the King’s guidelines.
On April 5, 2019, Labour Minister H.E. Police General Adul Sangsingkeo along with high-level executives from the Ministry of Labour visited establishments in Nakhon Ratchasima using Good Labour Practices (GLP) to enhance the quality of life of workers following the King’s guidelines. The visit took place at CPF’s (Thailand) Korat chicken processing plant (Thailand) in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Labour Minister said that the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare had encouraged establishments in the chicken meat export industry to adopt Good Labour Practices or GLP in business operations, whereby business owners have seen the benefits of using GLP in labour management. In addition, the company has cooperated in promoting the business operators who are members of the association. Furthermore, the department has encouraged businesses that are association members, domestic trade partners and chicken farmers to adopt such principles, as well as raise the level of industry operators to TLS standards in the chicken meat export industry.
Pol.Gen. Adul added that the Ministry of Labour had encouraged businesses in the chicken processing industry for exports to adopt Good Labour Practices, comprising 4,282 chicken farms for exports, chicken processing plants and other relevant businesses, and 27 slaughterhouses for export, totaling 181,000 relevant workers. Labour management has 4 essential principles: 1. No child labour 2. No forced labour 3. No discrimination, and 4. No human trafficking. The 6 principles are: 1. There is a labour management system. 2. Freedom of association 3. Opportunity to exchange opinions with employers 4. A safe working environment 5. Have hygiene and waste management and 6. Appropriate welfare.
Since 2016 -2017, GLP has been promoted in 4,191 establishments, whereby 3,435 establishments have adopted GLP comprising 37,548 workers. In 2018, the Ministry of Labour extended GLP promotion to other businesses such as pig farms, agriculture and basic processing business. To present, the efforts have enhanced labour management in the chicken meat export industry. As a result, workers in the chicken meat industry have better employment conditions and fair treatment. The business sector itself can prove to many countries of the value in business operations with labour responsibilities. From this operation, the export value of chickens increased from around 8 billion Baht in 2015 – 2016, to 9.6 billion Baht in 2017 and 100 billion Baht in 2018 showing that the industry was able to overcome trade barriers.
