Despite an earlier warning forbidding Thai workers to work in Thai traditional massage in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia has found that Thai workers are still travelling to the country and took up the job with the help of bogus brokers.

Recently, authorities at the Office received telephone calls from Thai workers in the Sarawak state who asked for help. The workers said they received jobs with the help of job placement agency in Thailand which had told them that the job offered attractive salary, is legal and offered comfortable stay. However, they were forced by employers after arriving to accept working and payment conditions and they would have to pay 10,000 ringgit, equivalent to about 100,000 baht, if they leave before their employment contracts expired. Besides that there were too many petty rules which had forced them to be at the disadvantage all the time, forcing many Thais to leave and pay the stipulated fine.

In order to protect Thai workers’ rights and to also preventing them from being a human trafficking prey, Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia would like to inform that the said employment conditions are  illegal in Thailand and Malaysia as well because of the stiff employment rules while the contract is not earlier approved by the Office. Thai workers are, therefore, requested to contact with authorities of the Office directly. They are also asked to contact with employment offices throughout Thailand or at Department of Employment which is located within the compound of Ministry of Labour.
