At 17.00 on 24 March 2017, Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the meeting on directions for workforce development towards the 21st century in alignment with the, with various relevant departments at the Department of Skill Development’s Pakorn Angsusingh Conference Room. The aim is to add value and improve the workforce using government framework to ensure the people are equipped with the right skills, mindset and mentality, which will require collaboration from both the public and private sector together.
Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the commencement of the action plan workshop for the Informal Worker Management Strategy 2017 – 2021, which took place at the Berkley Prathunam Hotel. The workshop was organized for relevant agencies to form actions plans together, aimed to promote protection and development of informal workers, using the strategy as a guideline to implement effective policies at the local level. She said that informal workers, totaling over half of the whole workforce with a population of 21.3 million in 2016, are an important component of economic growth.
Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the discussion with the National Strategic Reform and Reconciliation Committee, on regulations for people development towards the 21st century. The discussion held the main objective to improve the lives of Thai workers through knowledge and skills enhancement, by identifying main and relevant units to carry out the action plans which will focus on workers in the 10 targeted industries, that is the first s-curve and new s-curve.
Ms. Trinuch Thienthong, Minister of Labour, addressed the situation of rising tensions in the Middle East, stating that she has instructed Pol. Lt. Col. Wannapong Kotcharak, Permanent Secretary of Labour, is to establish a war room to monitor the situation and coordinate assistance for Thai workers in the region. The war room, located on the 5th floor of the Ministry of Labour, will operate 24 hours a day and be ready to provide support should the situation escalate to the point of evacuation. The Minister of Labour stated that evacuation is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and if directed by the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Labour stands ready to support the mission. All actions will depend on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ assessment of the level of risk and whether evacuation is necessary. At present, labour offices have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and be prepared to assist and relocate Thai workers to safe areas if they are affected. Ms. Trinuch Thienthong, Minister of Labour, disclosed details regarding the collapse of a dome roof structure at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority Training and Electrical Skills Testing Centre (Bang Phli), Soi National Housing Authority Bang Phli, Bang Sao Thong Sub-district, Bang Sao Thong District, Samut Prakan Province, which resulted in four workers being injured while on duty. She stated that reports from the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare confirmed that the building belongs to S.R.N. Sivakarn Limited Partnership, and that all injured persons are employees of the company. The incident occurred while the employees were carrying out their duties. She has therefore instructed the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare to assign safety inspectors from the Samut Prakan Provincial Office of Labour Protection and Welfare and the Occupational Safety Centre, Area 10, to urgently conduct an in-depth investigation into the cause of the accident. January 21, 2026 – Ms. Trinuch Thienthong, Minister of Labour, together with Mr. Somchat Supharee, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Skills Development, took part in a vocational training activity under the delivery restaurant course, featuring Koy See Mee and Khao Tang Na Tang. This course forms part of the GIG WORKER project of the Department of Skill Development, Ministry of Labour, held at the Modern Woman Cooking School. The Labour Minister stated that she places great importance on creating equal opportunities, particularly in enabling vulnerable groups, informal workers, older persons, and those affected by various circumstances to access vocational training. Culinary training is one of the key approaches to developing workforce skills that align with current and future labour market demands, especially in the service and tourism industries.
