MOL Prepares ASEAN Labour Inspectors in Fisheries to Support International Standards

          The Labour Minister commenced the 8th ASEAN Symposium on Labour Inspection to promote staff potential and create valuable work in the fishery sector, in compliance with international standards.

          Today (December 18, 2019), Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul chaired the commencement of the 8th ASEAN Symposium on Labour Inspection under the topic “creating valuable work in the fisheries sector through labour inspection in ASEAN.” The event took place at the Century Park Hotel, Bangkok. The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s Director-General Mr. Apinya Sucharitanan gave a report. The Labour Minister said that labour inspections are an essential strategy in labour management system, to enforce regulations to protect worker rights and create fair employment. This is mainly for workers in the fishery sector, as it has different employment and working conditions, with hazardous working environments, as well as workers living on boats. The industry also includes activities carried out across the territorial sea of ​​different countries, which may be a cause of violation of the protection of labour rights. To effectively protect the rights of this group of workers, requires cooperation from all parties involved, especially the cooperation of the port owner state.

          M.R. Chatumongol said that the issues leading to the 8th ASEAN Symposium on Labour Inspection under the topic “creating valuable work in the fisheries sector through labour inspection in ASEAN,” is to promote and develop cooperation mechanisms among the ASEAN Member States in protecting the labour rights in the fisheries sector. It references to international standards for labour, in which Thailand is the first ASEAN country in the region to ratify the International Labour Organization Convention 188on Working in the Fisheries Sector. The nation is also ready to encourage the ASEAN Member States to ratify the Convention for concrete actions to protect labour rights and continue to create valuable work in the fisheries sector

          The 8th ASEAN Symposium on Labour Inspection was organized following the resolution of the 21st ASEAN Labour Minister Meeting on May 24, 2010, in Hanoi, Vietnam. It was agreed that the ASEAN Symposium on Labour would be held as a forum for ASEAN member countries and network partners to exchange knowledge, experience, and best practices in managing and establishing labour inspection systems in member countries. Thailand was honoured to host the conference on the agenda as the ASEAN Chair in 2019.
