On March 18, 2021, Deputy Labour Minister Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat met with Mr. Jim Wayman, Acting US Ambassador to Thailand. The meeting discussed skill development for skilled workers to meet international standards and promote entrepreneurship towards competitiveness in the world market. Deputy Director-General of the Department of Skill Development Ms. Jiraporn Punnarit, and representatives from relevant departments, also joined the meeting at the Saengsingkaew meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour.

Prof. Narumon said the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development has a mission to develop workers’ potential at all levels to promote labour productivity, in alignment with the needs of all labour markets, especially vulnerable groups. It is a part of the mechanism driving the country’s economic development. In addition, the DSD plays a role in developing labour skill standards following international standards. It promotes skill standards testing and competitions and issues certificates to certify labour standards both domestically and internationally. It also develops systems and models for workforce development, promoting the potential of labour and entrepreneurship, and coordinating cooperation between the public and private sectors. The DSD further aims to create a network for developing labour capacity both at home and abroad. In addition, labour skills were developed during the Covid-19 pandemic for both formal and informal labour groups by adjusting the format as appropriate, such as shifting to online training so that the DSD can continue to carry out its missions for the most benefit.

It also discussed the development of trainers, curriculums, teaching channels, materials, tools, expert support, the development of workmanship standards consistent with the US industries, and cooperation on occupational safety, health, and work environment to contribute to the collaboration which will continue to benefit the country.
