On September 6, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul assigned Advisor to the Labour Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jak Punchoopet and the Department of Employment’s Inspector-General Mr. Suwan Duangta to visit foreign workers’ renewal of work permits (Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar) at the Samut Prakarn Employment Office, to follow up on the process of obtaining a work permit and to stay in the Kingdom. The renewal was for groups whose work permits will expire before March 31, 2020.
Advisor to the Labour Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jak Punchoopet said that the renewal of work permits of foreign nationals from the 3 nationalities, followed the Cabinet’s resolution on August 20. The applications for work permit renewals for migrant workers opened for people whose work permit expires from September 30, 2019, to November 1, 2019, whereby the foreign workers will be granted permission to work up to September 30, 2021. Employers have started to file for demand to hiring foreign workers and apple for the name list at Provincial Employment Offices and the Bangkok Employment Offices, in the area where the foreign worker is working or in the area where the head office of the employer/establishment is located, since September 2, 2019.
For migrant workers of 3 nationalities that must be undertaken at this time, there are a total of 261,491 people, divided into 243,093 original nationality proofing groups, 12,040 people under Article 83 of the Fisheries Ordinance B.E. 2558, and 6,358 people under groups to create/update the historical record. From September 2-5, 2019, 722 employees have renewed their work permit with 218 employers. The top 5 provinces with the most renewals are Bangkok with 236 cases, Samut Prakan with 97 cases, Pattani with 83 cases, Chumphon with 79 cases, Rayong with 71 cases and others with 156 cases. Classified by groups, 519 were in the nationality proofing group, 155 in the pink card group and 48 under the select MOU group. There were 383 Burmese workers with the highest number of cases, followed by 321 Cambodians and 18 Laotian workers.
The Department of Employment’s Inspector-General Mr. Suwan Duangta added that employers/establishments must check the information on the employment of foreign workers at the Provincial Employment Offices or the Bangkok Employment Offices in the area where the establishment is located to keep the information current. If the authorization information is not found in the database, he asked employers/establishments to coordinate with the respective employment offices for further process.
