The Labour Minister assigned his Assistant to join in the ceremony transferring the Colombo Process (CP) Chairmanship through teleconference. The session discussed the problems of workers working abroad and to find ways to take care of labour protection, strengthening competencies, and cooperation between states.
On April 20, 2021, at 14.30 hours, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned Assistant to the Labour Minister Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong, to join the ceremony of transferring the Colombo Process (CP) Chairmanship through teleconference. The session exchanged experiences and good practices in working abroad and discussed the problems of workers working abroad. It also sought guidelines in caring and ensuring labour protection, strengthening competencies, and cooperation between states. Nepal has chaired since 2018 until now. The chairmanship will be handed over to Afghanistan. The CP has 12 member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Eight countries import labour as observers: Bahrain, Italy, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provides academic support and serves as CP Secretary. The occasion took place at the Prasong Rananant meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour.
Mr. Surachai commended the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal for presiding over the Colombo process from 2018 to the present. Nepal’s chairmanship gave rise to cooperation among member countries to advance and develop more efficient labour management and dispatch to destination countries. This includes the implementation of the International Agreement on Safe, Orderly, and Normal Migration. Thailand showed appreciation for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for its chairmanship of the Colombo Process after Nepal. Thailand is pleased to support the activities under the Colombo Process to further achieve the development approach following the GCM and SDGs 2037 and requested the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to achieve every goal throughout its CP Chairmanship.
