Labour Minister Assigns Secretariat to Take Requests from the Northern Labour Network and Consult on Systematic Migrant Worker Management

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned his Secretariat to listen to reports on the situation of problems and impacts and to seek advice on cooperation in managing migrant workers’ problems, as well as the acceptance of 13 requests for systematic cooperation in managing migrant workers.
          On March 31, 2021, at the Mitmaitree 2 meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned the Labour Minister’s Secretariat Mr. Suthep Chitvong to welcome the Manager of the Human Status Network Foundation, Mr. Santiphong Moulfong, and Director of the Labour Right Promotion Network (LPN) Mr. Sompong Sakaeo, and a group of 25 people on the occasion of meeting the Labour Minister. The meeting reported the problems and impacts and to seek advice on cooperation in managing migrant workers. The Secretary to the Minister of Labour said that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha, and the Ministry of Labour under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, gives importance to improving the quality of life of the workers who work in Thailand, ensuring equal rights and protection under the law. Today, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin, therefore assigned his Secretariat to meet with the representatives to acknowledge the situation, problems, and impacts and seek advice and cooperation in dealing with migrant workers.
          Mr. Suthep said that the Northern Labour Network submitted a call to the Ministry of Labour to accelerate its actions, such as establishing a systematic policy on managing migrant workers, taking into account human rights principles, and not discriminating. The request also included the revision of the law to expand the coverage of benefits to improve the quality of life for migrant workers for equality, including civil society and migrant workers to participate as a foreign volunteer and establish a committee for managing migrant workers at the provincial level.

       The requests will be presented to the Labour Minister to assign relevant agencies to consider the feasibility and continue to operate following the legal framework.
