Labour Minister Expresses Condolences to Deceased Worker from Israel in State Quarantine and Five Workers in Saudi Arabi from Covid-19 Infections

                The Labour Minister expressed his condolences for the death of a 39-year-old Thai worker after staying in quarantine to monitor Covid-19 symptoms after returning to Thailand and staying for only one day. The Buriram Provincial Labour Office and agencies in Buriram were ordered to contact relatives for support. The Labour Minister had a teleconference with the Minister Counsellor on Labour about 5 Thai workers in Saudi Arabia who have died from Covid-19 infections. He showed concern for Thai workers and ordered officials to monitor the situation closely.

                Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin shared his condolences for the case of a 39-year-old Thai worker who returned from Israel, who decided to jump from the balcony of a hotel in State Quarantine and died during their stay in quarantine to monitor Covid-19 symptoms, after returning to Thailand for only one day. From a preliminary investigation, the deceased was aged 39, from Buriram. They had traveled to work in Israel with SHMVEL GAMMIL and had worked with the employer for five years and three months since July 2014. They had just returned from work in Israel.

                Mr. Suchart spoke about initial support, whereby the Buriram Provincial Labour Office had contacted the deceased’s relatives. They were on their way to pick up the body for religious rites at the family’s hometown. Upon initial checks, the Buriram Provincial Social Security Office had found that before this Thai worker went to work abroad, they worked in Thailand until November 18, 2013. They had an old-age pension fund of 39,559.29 Baht. In respect of benefits payments, the office will visit the family and recheck eligibility. Initially, the family will receive a funeral fee of 30,000 Baht.

                Yesterday (August 27, 2020), Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin chaired the video conference with Commander Lieutenant Vittavat Koodprasert, Minister Counselor (on Labour) from the Labour Office in Saudi Arabia (Riyadh). The Labour Minister said that Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha has continuously monitored the Covid-19 epidemic situation. He showed concern about the five workers who died from Covid-19 infections in Saudi Arabia and emphasized for relevant agencies to support families and facilitate movement back to the deceased workers’ hometowns to perform religious ceremonies according to relatives’ wishes.

                Mr. Suchart further said that from the Minister Counselor’s (on Labour) report from the Labour Office in Riyadh, five Thai workers were known to have died in Saudi Arabia from a Covid-19 infection, all of whom were male. The first worker was aged 69, an electrician from Prachuap Khiri Khan, the second was aged 59, a seamstress from Ratchaburi, the third was aged 67, a groundwater drill technician from Nakhon Ratchasima, the fourth person was aged 70 years, an electrician from Udon Thani and the fifth was aged 67, a truck driver from Lampang.

                For initial assistance, the Provincial Labour Offices, together with the head of government agencies under the Ministry of Labour in the province where the deceased lived, will visit the relatives to give words of encouragement and coordinate information. The relevant parties will continue to coordinate and facilitate the relatives’ wishes in the management of the body.
