Labour Minister Instruct Provincial Employment Offices to Visit Families of Thai Workers to Explain US-Iran Situation

          The Labour Minister ordered Provincial Employment Offices to visit Thai workers’ relatives in Iraq and Iran, to clarify the situation, create morale, and prepare to assist.

          On January 10, 2020, at 09.00 hours, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul spoke about the progress on preparation for the dispute between the United States and Iran saying. He said that after ordering the Minister Counselors (on labour) in both (Riyadh) Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which are responsible for looking after Thai workers in Iraq and Iran, to coordinate with employers that have employed Thai workers to informed them about the situation and survey the need for help, it was found that no Thai workers have suffered any adversity affecting their daily lives. Most recently, the Ministry of Labour has instructed the Department of Employment’s Overseas Employment Administration Division to create a LINE group to allow all Provincial Employment Offices to join and communicate with Thai workers and relatives to support the situation. In addition, he ordered all Provincial Employment Offices with Thai workers in Iraq and Iran, to visit relatives to inform the situation and create morale for the workers’ families.

          Kalasin Provincial Employment Officer Mrs. Uthaiwan Kotrakul, together with the heads of government agencies and officials under the Ministry of Labour, visited Torsak shop, located at 167 Moo 3, Non Buri Sub-district, Sahatsakhan District, Kalasin Province. The visiting committee met with Mr. Phromma Phutthaisong and Mrs. Kanyarak Thongsihakan, the father and mother of the 3 workers, which are Mr. Pornphoj Phutthaisong, Mr. Torsak Phutthaisong and Mrs. Phrommas Phutthaisong who have worked as spa massage workers with the same employer in Tehran, Iran. The visiting committee reported the situation, as well as to build morale for the relatives and family of the workers. They were notified by the workers via video call and informed that they were unaffected by the situation. In addition, the employer has taken good care and responsibility. The workers have been able to live and work normally and contact the family every day. They also acknowledged the concern from the Thai government and all related agencies. To conclude, the Kalasin Employment Office asked the workers to continue working and living with caution, to follow the news from the government, and provide a contact phone number in case they need help to relatives.

          Chaiyaphum Provincial Employment Officer Mr. Wichit Intaracharoen, along with overseas employment officers, visited relatives of Thai workers working in Iran, living in Ban Khwao, Chaiyaphum province. They met 1 relative, Mr. Tawee Khadjaturat. According to preliminary data analysis, Mr. Tawee Khadjaturat traveled to work in Iran around November 2018 and returned to Thailand in March 2019, and is currently working in Nakhon Ratchasima province.
