The Ministry of Labour received the Prime Ministers’ policy to inspect migrant workers in border areas after finding migrants fleeing the violence in Myanmar to look for work in Thailand.
Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin revealed that Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha is concerned about the spread of Covid-19 from migrants who fled from the unrest in Myanmar to Thailand. He ordered the Ministry of Labour to investigate and prevent illegal brokers from taking advantage of the opportunity. Latest, he instructed officers to investigate and visit the area to work with the relevant departments to prevent such incidents.
Deputy Permanent Secretary and Acting Director-General of the Department of Employment, Mr. Phairoj Chotikasathian, said the Department of Employment accepts the Ministry of Labour’s orders to visit inspection areas throughout the country. In particular, the provinces in bordering areas with Myanmar. He reiterated that for brokers and employers thinking of illegal migrant labour if found to be a violation of the law, employers who hire foreigners without a work permit or allow foreigners to work other than those who have the right to be able to face a fine from 10,000-100,000 Baht per foreign employer. For repeated offenses, the employer must be imprisoned for not more than one year or a fine of 50,000 – 200,000 Baht, or both. Such cases will not be allowed to hire foreigners to work for three years. Foreigners who work without a work permit or work other than those who have the right to be able to will face a fine of 5,000 – 50,000 Baht and will be sent back to their country.
