Ministry of Labour Emphasizes Thailand’s Support of Safe Migration

            “Deputy Labour Minister” delivered an address at the Sixth Ministerial Consultation of the Colombo Process in Nepal, with emphasis on Thailand’s support the Colombo Process Framework on promoting safe labour migration.

         On November 16, 2018, Deputy Labour Minister Pol.Gen. Amnat Unardngam led Thai representatives to join the Sixth Ministerial Consultation of the Colombo Process organized by the Nepalese Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nepal. Ministers, ambassadors and senior officials from the 12 member countries of the Colombo Process attended the consultation, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, totalling 40 participants. Ambassador of Thailand to Nepal H.E. Mr. Bhakavat Tanskul and the Ministry of Labour’s Assistant Permanent Secretary and Director of the Office of International Cooperation Mr. Somsak Apiwantakul also joined the consultation which took place in Kathmandu, Nepal.

        Pol.Gen. Amnat gave an address at the consultation, where he said that Thailand is a country of origin and destination of labour, thus the Ministry of Labour operates to promote and protect both Thai workers abroad and foreign workers in Thailand. It provides skill training to Thai workers before work deployment and protection by local Thai Labour Office abroad, together with the Embassy. Meanwhile, under the policy of Labour Minister H.E. Police General Adul Sangsingkeo, Thailand has successfully implemented policies to organize the management of the 1.3 migrant workers from neighbouring countries who can now be registered. Improvement has also been made to the preparation of MOUs with origin countries so that migrant workers are protected by Thai law. With continued efforts of Thailand, the United States has reviewed the situation of human trafficking in Thailand, where it has been moved from the Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 2. The head of the Thai delegation has emphasized Thailand’s intention to support the implementation of the Colombo Process Framework to promote safe and organized migration.

        The consultation included the signing of the Kathmandu Declaration to show a united intention to drive the cooperation framework forward and move towards a more efficient management of workforce delivery to destination countries, in line with other global cooperation frameworks, such as the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the 2030 Agenda for Development by the United Nations.
