MOL Accelerates Support for Employees Affected by Surat Thani Ferry Collapse, Compensating Families of the Deceased with Over 1.8M Baht

           The Permanent Secretary of Labour reported that the Social Security Office has accelerated support to insured employees who were injured and died from the Racha Ferry 4 collapse in Surat Thani, to ensure that the employees will receive compensation in the event of death. The Sakon Nakhon Social Security Office has been ordered to facilitate the payment of compensation to the employees’ relatives, totaling over 1.8 million Baht.

             Today (August 3, 2020), Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol spoke about the progress in supporting employees who were injured and died from the Racha Ferry 4 collapse in Surat Thani, on August 1. In the initial phase, the Ministry of Labour by the Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Tosapol Kritawongwiman, ordered Surat Thani Social Security Officer Mrs. Marasri Chaisrangsee, Surat Thani Social Security Officer from Koh Samui Branch Mrs. Tharathip Thanuithong to visit the area to check the information and proceed to assist the insured employees, including the relatives and insured employees who were affected by this incident. The inspection found a total of 16 victims. The first group was injured and admitted to the Koh Samui hospital. There was a total of 9 people who were employees of the Racha Ferry 4 vessel, whereby the names of the known 6 people were is 1) Mr. Jumnian Bureemas 2) Mr. Sutthirak Muang-in 3) Mr. Charoen Phongphancharoen 4) Mr. Chai Kitchimplee 5) Mr. Anuphon Chankasem and 6) Mr. Viroj Jodwang. Another victim was an employee of EMS Company which was Mr. Kriengsak Chaiwong and the remaining two people were Mr. Sarayut Daemuangklang and Mr. Boonchuay Phromthong, ten-wheel truck drivers who were not insured employees. The doctor had treated the two and allowed them to return home.

           The Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Todsaphon Kritwongwiman said that in the second group of 7 victims, 3 people were found. One person had died, which was Mr. Devin Surat, aged 44 years, a ship worker on Racha Ferry, whereas two people had returned home; the remaining 4 are in search. For the deceased, the Social Security Office’s Secretary-General has ordered the Sakon Nakhon Social Security Office to coordinate with the relatives of the dead, supporting the relatives of Mr. Dhevin Surat. This ensures the family receives coverage benefits under the Social Security Law, consisting of a funeral fee of 40,000 Baht, paid to the funeral manager, compensation in case of death to be paid to the heirs in the amount 70 percent of the 10-year wage, totaling 1,680,000 Baht (calculated from the maximum wage base of 20,000 Baht) and an old-age pension fund of 164,174.46 Baht, totaling 1,884,174.46 Baht (one million eight hundred and eighty-four thousand, one hundred seventy-four Baht and forty-six Satang). For the body of the deceased today (August 3, 2020), relatives will take it back to perform religious rites in their hometown of Sakon Nakhon province.

           The remaining 4 people are still in search. The relevant agencies and the Social Security Office of Surat Thani, Koh Samui Branch, are still vigilant at the search center to closely monitor the situation until the rest of the missing groups are found so that they can provide assistance and look after the benefits in a timely manner.
