On January 6, 2020, Secretariat to the Labour Minister Lt. Gen. Nanthadet Meksawat, presided over the press conference on the cooperation between PTT Oil and Retail Business PCL or OR, and the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, which aims to be a network against all forms of illegal child labour. The occasion took place at the petrol service station in Soi Vibhavadi 11, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok. The Ministry of Labour’s senior executives joined the occasion, along with Executive Vice President of Oil Retail Mr. Boonma Panthanakonkul, who also joined the press conference.

Lt. Gen. Nanthadet said that the Ministry of Labour attaches importance to the protection and care so that children entering the workforce receive fair employment and safe working conditions. It is also an opportunity to develop skills and collect working experience. The ministry aims to create knowledge and understanding among those involved, whereby initiating intensive labour inspections using law enforcement, including amendments to the law by enhancing penalties for offenses related to illegal child labour. The efforts aim to prevent unfair labour practices as well as establish mechanisms for participation between the private sector and agencies under the Ministry of Labour towards concrete results.

“Combating all forms of illegal child labour does not mean that there will be no child employment, as the work of young workers is beneficial to the children themselves and their families. It allows them to learn about responsibilities, earn money, and learn about the real working world. However, there must not be any illegal employment, such as the employment of children under 15 years of age or employees who are 15 years old but not 18 years of age whose work or work environment is harmful to their health, safety, or morality, which labour protection laws stipulate. If you see any form of illegal child labour, notify the Ministry of Labour’s 1506 hotline,” Lt. Gen. Nanthadet concluded.

Currently, there are over 1,800 petrol stations under PTT, which sees the importance of combating illegal child labour in all forms, together with the Ministry of Labour. It aims to employ child workers to work legally with the company and join the network in the campaign and promoting against all forms of illegal child labor.
