The Ministry of Labour assigned the Department of Skills Development to join SINOPEC, in the development of Thai workers in automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry, to meet target industries and drive the Thai economy.
On November 4, 2020, Deputy Labour Minister Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat revealed that the government, under leadership of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha and Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, oversees the Ministry of Labour. The government has a policy to drive Thailand and strengthen the economy, whereby the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development (DSD), has developed the workforce’s skills in line with technology and industrial needs. They have been assigned to integrate with network partners, both public and private, in order to drive the policy to achieve results effectively. Today, the DSD has joined with SINOPEC International Petroleum Service Corporation, to develop skills in automatic welding technology. This will raise the skill level for Thai workers and support the petroleum industry, which is one of the 12 major industries that the government wants to promote to strengthen the national economy.
SINOPEC, which is part of the SINOPEC Group from China, is the world’s leading petroleum engineering company. It was rated by Fortune Global 500 magazine as the second highest income generating company in the world in 2019 and 2020. SINOPEC has operated in Thailand in collaboration with PTT Public Company Limited, in the natural gas pipeline business. But due to the Covid-19 situation, it has affected the import of workers. Therefore, there is a need to transfer technology to Thai workers in the field of automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry, as well as being a center for training in welding to export Thai workers to work in Asia and other regions.
Prof. Narumon added that the DSD has guidelines for skill development in the field of automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry, in collaboration with SINOPEC International Petroleum Service Corporation (SINOPEC), to develop trainers of the Department of Skill Development, which can expand the training results to students or workers in the industry, promoting skills training in automatic welding technology. There are four courses, including intermediate electric welding, TIG/argon welding, medium carbon dioxide training, advanced welding and welding of boiler tubes and pressure vessels. The target is for 100 participants to join the pilot training. Participants can attend the training at the Chonburi Institute of Skill Development 3, or the SINOPIC training center. SINOPEC will bring experts to pass on knowledge and practical training equipment to be installed at the Chonburi Skill Development Institute 3, to be used as a training center for such welding. After completing each training course, it is expected that 300 trained people will be employed in the pilot program. It is a good opportunity for Thai professionals.
