On June 21, 2021, at 09.30 hours, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin chaired the Ministry of Labour’s Bureaucratic Development Committee Meeting No. 1/2021 at the Prasong Rananant Conference Room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour. He said that the Department of Skill Development has an important mission to enable the country to achieve its goals, which is “stability, prosperity and sustainability” by developing the potential of the workforce to achieve higher productivity, in line with the demands of the labour market, to keep up with the technology 4.0. It also supervises establishments to be compliant with the law, providing labour skill standards certification, upskills training to expand knowledge, expertise, and reskill to adjust skills to support work in various types of employment to comply with the New Normal. In the Covid-19 situation during 2020-2021, there were 1,375,599 unemployed insured people, with 486,145 insured people who have returned to the system. However, there is still accumulated unemployment of 889,454 people. If the Department of Skill Development has implemented skill development through upskilling and reskilling, it is believed that the unemployed population will be able to return to the system, have a job, a career, and generate income, which will drive Thailand’s economy and society towards stability, prosperity, and sustainability.
Improvement to the Department of Skill Development’s structure will play an important role in driving the missions of the 30 Skill Development Offices, to upgrade them to Skill Development Institutions 26 to 55, to be central governments in the region. There are provinces in the EEC area such as Chachoengsao and other important economic areas such as Samut Sakhon, Nonthaburi, Prachinburi, Phang Nga, Krabi, and Trang. The details are with the committee to help consider upgrading the Department of Skill Development by approving to establish 30 Skill Development Institutes to effectively drive the missions on skill development in the responsible areas and to produce benefits promote both the formal and informal workforce.
