MOL Commences 15th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting on Driving ASEAN Consensus

            The Permanent Secretary of Labour commenced the 15th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting (SLOM) to drive cooperation for protection in employment, skills development, promotion of quality employment and ways to exchange knowledge to prepare a new plan to support and drive the ASEAN consensus.

 

 

           On July 2, 2019, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol chaired the commencement of the 15th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting at Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok. He said that Thailand gives its full support to ensure that a productive meeting to cooperation from all parties to drive the framework of ASEAN Senior Labour Officials, covering a wide range of activities about employment protection and skills development In the ASEAN region. The region has a population of over 630 million people, with around 350 million workers, making ASEAN the fourth largest population after India, China and the European Union. The rate of economic growth in the ASEAN region is satisfactory, averaging higher than 5 percent each year.
           The Permanent Secretary of Labour further said that as ASEAN Senior Labour Officials that have come together to meet every year to jointly drive the ASEAN Labour Minister’s plan to drive the mission to promote productive employment, establishments that are integrated and safe, a skilled and adaptable workforce and workers with good quality of life through social protection. This senior official’s meeting is an excellent opportunity and a forum to discuss and exchange learnings from what has been done in the past, to prepare for actions that must be done in the future, especially in the preparation of a new plan for 2021-2025.
           The meeting’s main topics were on the self-assessment of ASEAN member states to drive the ASEAN committee’s action plan following the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of Foreign Workers’ Rights (2018 – 2025) to propel ASEAN consensus. The assessment results will be reported to the ASEAN Secretariat to track the progress of the amended Terms of Reference (TOR) for ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting (SLOM), drafting new project proposals for the ASEAN Ministerial Labour Plan, 2021 – 2025 and the implementation of measures that have not yet been implemented.
