MOL Concerned for Workers Abandoned by Employer in Uzbekistan

          The Ministry of Labour is concerned for 28 Thai workers returning from Uzbekistan. It ordered the Suvarnabhumi Checkpoint of the Department of Employment to look after the workers and check the information on the fund to help job seekers to work abroad.

          On June 16, 2020, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol reported the Prime Minister’s orders to help the 28 Thai workers who returned from working in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The workers were abandoned by their employers and employment agencies, who had not paid salaries since March 2020. The Ministry of Labour has showed concern about the said Thai worker group, and has ordered the Suvarnabhumi Checkpoint of the Department of Employment to carry out help and care for the Thai workers at Suvarnabhumi Airport, as well as ensure benefits are received if the workers are members of the fund for jobseekers looking for work abroad. The Department of Employment will conduct an investigation and gather evidence to prosecute violators of the Employment and Job Seeker Protection Act B.E. 2528 and the amendment (Version 2) B.E. 2537.

          However, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Labour on the Fund Administration for Assisting Job Seekers to Work Abroad B.E. 2549, workers who are members of the fund will be assisted by for transportation (overseas), accommodation, food, medical expenses and other necessary expenses, upon actual expense not exceeding 30,000 Baht

          Mr. Suthi said that Thai workers who have worked abroad under legal conditions and have applied as a member of a fund to help people find work overseas, will receive help and assistance if they encounter problems overseas at the rate specified by the fund. As for wages payable in foreign countries, the Ministry of Labour will coordinate the Department of Consular Affairs to follow up with the employer.
