MOL prepares to produce workers in automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry, aiming to enhance Thai labour to enter the world market.

On March 19, 2021, Deputy Labour Minister Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat reported that the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development (DSD) cooperated with Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (SINOPEC) to develop the workforce to be skilled with technology, meeting the needs of the industrial sector. The DSD was assigned to work with network partners both in the public and private sectors, drive policies to achieve results effectively, participate in the development of the DSD’s personnel, and expand the training results for Thai workers to promote employment. It has also conducted training in automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry, establishing the national labour skill standard in the petroleum field. This will raise the skill level for Thai workers, supporting the petroleum industry, which is 1 of 12 important target industries that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha, wants to promote, to strengthen the country’s economy.

The Deputy Labour Minister added that there is a plan to train the DSD’s personnel in the petroleum industry. The training will support two batches, each with 20 people, at the company’s training center in Chonburi. The trained participants will become model speakers to expand the training results for the country’s workforce. It is presently preparing a training course for semiautomatic pipe welding at less than 30 inches in diameter, semiautomatic pipe welding for over 30 inches in diameter, and semiautomatic pipe welding in pressure vessels. The goal is to train 300 people per year to attend the training at the company’s training center or the Chonburi Skill Development Institute 3, where SINOPEC supports lecturers, materials, equipment, and tools necessary for the training. It has also jointly established the national labour skill standards in automatic welding technology in the petroleum industry to guarantee that Thai workers are of accepted standards, ready to work with quality and efficiency. In the future, it is expected to establish a technology training center in the petroleum industry in Chonburi Province, to be a workforce productivity center specializing in pipe welding in the petroleum industry, to support the labour market both at home and abroad.

“This is a good opportunity for Thai workers to upgrade their skills to have specific expertise to meet technology and industry needs. This will give participants more career opportunities, leading to a stable career and sustainable incomes,” concluded the Deputy Labour Minister.
