Content Description

The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General commenced the conference to raise awareness and discuss directions for Thailand towards Convention 190 and Recommendation 206 on violence and abuse in the working world.

Today (February 21, 2020) at 09.00 hours, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol assigned the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General Mrs. Phattana Phanfak co-chaired the commencement of the meeting to raise awareness and discuss directions for Thailand towards Convention 190 and Recommendation 206 on violence and abuse in the working world. The meeting took place at the Piman Man Room, Anantara Siam Hotel, Bangkok. The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General said that “The Thai government is aware of the importance of labour and aims to improve the quality of life for workers in all professional groups, both domestically and internationally. The Thai government gives priority to the promotion and determination to drive the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 by reducing inequality and promoting valuable work for everyone, without leaving anyone behind.”

“We are aware that violence and abuse in the working world are against human rights. It is unacceptable and should not happen to anyone, regardless of that person’s status. Thailand is one of 187 members of the International Labour Organization, which voted to support the new International Labour Standard or Convention 190 and Recommendation 206 on violence and abuse in the working world. This is considered a historical convention approved at the 108th International Labour Organization conference last year, which was the Centenary Session, or occasion to celebrate the 100th anniversary. The session was important, especially as the first international instrument showing the commitment of the world community to eliminate violence and abuse in the working world.”

“Convention 190 has a wide range of content and scope, by protecting all people involved in the working world, such as employers, employees, trainees, job testers and job applicants, and enforces the violence and abuse that occurs outside of the workplace. In addition, violence and abuse have a comprehensive definition of physical, mental, sexual, or economic damage as well. Therefore, creating awareness for all parties, and the development of laws and regulations in Thailand is necessary.”

“Today’s meeting is a good opportunity for all stakeholders in Thailand to learn together about the provisions and implementation of the Convention and recommendations, as mentioned by experts from the International Labour Organization. The session also facilitates the exchange of ideas on the operational direction regarding the two instruments suitable for the context and situation in Thailand. I sincerely hope that all of you will have the knowledge and experience to use and expand in formulating policies, plans and measures or developing laws, related regulations, and guidelines, including creating awareness among your network, to join hands to fight violence and abuse in the working world in Thailand, following the intentions,” concluded the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General.
