MOL Joins Conference with UN ESCAP and UN Network on Migration

Content Description

On March 11, 2021, at 09.00 hours, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol assigned Assistant to the Permanent Secretary of Labour Ms. Pattaraporn Samantarat, to join the virtual roundtable discussion on “Progress made with respect to legal labour migration pathways, fair recruitment, and decent work and challenges.” The discussion reviewed the implementation of international agreements on “The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM)” organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and the UN Network on Migration. The session discussed the following three issues:
          1) The current situation of migration in Thailand, including labour management in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
          2) Workforce skill development.
          3) Various challenges.

The GCM is a legally non-binding document but is a mutual commitment between member states and representatives of the United Nations, endorsed at the High-Level Interstate Conference on December 10, 2018, in Marrakesh, Morocco. It is intended to organize the movement of populations across national borders and provide a core international legal framework that sets out a comprehensive approach to organizing international migration, comprising 23 items on the vision, practice, and objective frameworks, along with the guidelines members should follow. There is a mechanism to monitor global progress every four years in the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), which will begin in 2022. During the four-year reporting period, there will be a regional monitoring mechanism (Regional Review).
