On September 10, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul welcomed Myanmar’s Ambassador to Thailand H.E. U Myo Myint Than on a courtesy call to introduce and discuss labour issues at the Labour Minister’s room, 6th floor, Ministry of Labour. Myanmar’s Ambassador to Thailand discussed the closing of the Myanmar Children Learning Center in Ranong on August 24, 2019, as inspections at the Learning Center for Quality of Life Development Thai-Myanmar Border, Ranong, found 32 Burmese nationals working as teachers with 31 temporary passports and 1 passport. Their visas were valid, but they were not holding a work permit. Mueang Ranong Police Station has prosecuted the 32 workers with a fine of 5,000 Baht per person and has sent them to the Immigration Bureau of Ranong, out of Thailand on August 26, 2019, as a guideline for hiring teachers legally and alleviating the suffering for the Burmese students in the Learning Center for Quality of Life Development Thai-Myanmar Border, Ranong.
Myanmar’s Ambassador to Thailand also discussed with the Labour Minister, the issue of proposals for a temporary reduction of visa fees for migrant workers residing in the Kingdom for no more than 2 year, from the previous fee of 1,900 Baht/year. This is from the meeting of the policy of foreign worker management on July 8, 2019, whereby the ambassador requested the fee to be reduced to 500 Baht/2 years for the benefit of employers and foreign workers.
The Labour Minister acknowledged the issues and said he would assign agencies under the Ministry of Labour to conduct and consult with relevant agencies for further action.
