The Permanent Secretary of Labour welcomed Mr. Graeme Buckley, ILO Country Office Director for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic, ready to continue the academic mission to raise the standard of labour in Thailand to international levels.
On June 20, 2019, at 11.30 hours, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol, Deputy Permanent Secretary Pol.Maj. Romayong Surakitbanharn and the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General Mr. Somsak Apiwantanakul welcomed Mr. Graeme Buckley, ILO Country Office Director for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic on courtesy call to congratulate him on the new position. The meeting also included discussions on labour matters to continue the cooperation in the implementation of labour projects. The meeting took place at the Permanent Secretary of Labour’s office, 8th floor, Ministry of Labour. The Permanent Secretary of Labour congratulated the ILO on it’s 100th anniversary said that he was pleased to partner with the organization in carrying out various labour projects and thanked the ILO for providing technical assistance to Thailand, especially the Ship to Shore Rights project, which is sponsored by the European Union (EU) to raise the level of protection for the rights of fishery workers in Thailand, in compliance with human rights principles and international standards. The project also eliminates human trafficking problems, forced labour and the use of child labour in worst forms in the fishing sector. This includes the ratification of Protocol 29 to the Forced Labour Convention,1930 (P29) on June 4, 2018 and the Convention 188 on Work in Fishing, 2008 (C188) on 30 January 2019, which is considered an important indicator of the success of this cooperation.
Mr. Suthi added that the Ministry of Labour would like to thank the ILO for providing support with experts and knowledge in the preparation of Decent Work Country Program (DWCP) in Thailand from 2019 to 2021. He said that this issue of DWCP is appropriate for the Thai labour context and promotes the production of Thai labour and initiatives that Thailand has continuously implemented, especially the protection of Thai and migrant workers. In addition, the Ministry of Labour is pleased that Mr. Guy Ryder, ILO’s Director-General, will visit Thailand between July 20 – 24, 2019 to attend the 8th Education International World Congress at BITEC Bangna by Education International (EI) and visiting ILO member countries, whereby Thailand will coordinate in the details to prepare for the next reception.
