PM Concerned for Marigot Jewelry Employees in Bang Pu; Instructs Labour Minister to Ensure Support for All Employees

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin reported that the Prime Minister was concerned about Marigot Jewelry (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Bang Pu branch, relocating employees to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya branch. He urged to expedite the investigation and help the employees to receive all entitled benefits and protection by the law.
          On January 29, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin spoke about the case of Marigot Jewelry (Thailand) Co., Ltd., ceasing operations of the Bang Pu branch office. The company had asked for cooperation for all employees to move to work at the new branch in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The Ministry of Labour’s Office of Labour Protection and Welfare in Samut Prakan has always coordinated and received information from the company, as the HR department was always in contact since December 16, 2020. The Ministry of Labour has consistently worked proactively to aid in following the legal process. The Samut Prakan Provincial Labour Protection and Welfare Office has provided care to the employees and closely coordinated with the factory. The Social Security Office has taken care of unemployment benefits by paying 70 percent of wages in compensation for 200 days. The Samut Prakan Province Employment Office has prepared job vacancies to support. Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha and the Ministry of Labour under the supervision of Deputy Labour Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan has great concern for workers and instructed the Ministry of Labour to take care of the compensation payable under the law and transfer money to everyone’s account. This is especially for those who do not wish to work in the new location, as most people live in the Samut Prakan area. Therefore, the respective workers have requested compensation instead.
          Mr. Suchart further said that from the inspection carried out by the Samut Prakan Labour Protection and Welfare Office, the company has always coordinated with the office. The office received additional facts: 1) On January 27, 2021, the company ordered the employees to stop work from January 28 to 31, 2021, as the Bang Pu branch did not have work. On January 31, 2021, the employer will pay the wages for January 2021, in the full amount, to the employees. 2) Bang Pu branch employees consisting of 109 employees, comprising 80 female and 29 male employees, wish to move to the new office in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. For this group of workers, the company will provide a monthly relocation allowance of 2,000 Baht for months 1-12 and a one-time payment according to the employees’ tenure. 3) There are 1,160 Bang Pu branch employees who do not wish to move to the new office in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, comprising 1,500 female and 110 male workers. The company will pay legal compensation for 195,842,480 Baht, the bonus payment for 2021 of 16,171,324.83 Baht, and special assistance in the amount of 251,835,585.52 Baht, totaling 463,849,390.35 Baht to employees on January 30. This week, the Social Security Office in Samut Prakan province will continue investigating to pay for unemployment compensation benefits.
