“Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark as chairman of the Wage Board reports that the meeting resolution has not yet been finalized. The board will have to study information from the 46 provinces that did not ask for an increase for consideration to ensure maximization the overall economy. The next meeting will take place at the end of April.
On March 13, 2019, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark gave a speech after chairing the Wage Committee meeting at Prasong Rananant meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour. He explained that the meeting considered the information from the Provincial Wage Subcommittees with 46 provinces that did not ask for a wage increase. The wage committee consisted of representatives from employers, employees and the government, whereby the resolution was to request additional information from the 46 respective Wage Subcommittees to consider, to summarize the reasons for not raising wages for the Committee’s consideration before the decision.
Mr. Jarin said that meanwhile, the policy agencies such as the Ministry of Commerce and Bank of Thailand commented that the economy is currently in an uncertain state. With the Thai Baht appreciation, international trade wars and tight exports together with the relevant factors in all 46 provinces, which must have readily available information for the Wage Committee to consider to benefit the country’s economy as a whole.
In consideration of a minimum wage increase, many factors must be considered such as consumer indicators, product price overview, gross product of each province, business efficiency or ability and the overall picture of the province, combined with an overview at the national level and economic conditions of similar countries. However, this year will have to consider wage adjustments which require a variety of factors including indicators on the Thai, neighboring and world economies. The next Wage Committee meeting will be scheduled at the end of April.
