On November 3, 2022, the Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, assigned the Assistant to the Labour Minister, Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong, as a representative in receiving the letter submissions from the Mr. Manop Kuarat, Secretary-General of the State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SERC) and President of the Thai Rubber Union. They submitted a letter to Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha through the Labour Minister. Thirty-five presidents from other state enterprise labour unions also submitted the letter because the SERC reached a resolution that did not agree with the draft State Enterprise Labour Relations Act B.E…. as it would weaken the SERC. As a result, this could lead to more fraud opportunities. The Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, spoke about the tragedy at the Halloween Night Festival held in Itaewon Street in Seoul, South Korea, on the night of October 29. Many people attended the event, leaving at least 151 people killed and 82 injured from suffocation. As soon as he heard the news, the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha expressed their condolences and urged relevant agencies to expedite investigations. Mr. Suchart continued that on the Ministry of Labour’s part, he instructed the Labour Ambassador to South Korea to expedite checks if any Thai workers had died in the incident. The report of Minister-Counselor on Labour at the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul, Mr. Nithipat Wattanasuwakul, reported that no Thai workers have died.
