Representatives from 15 employee organization councils and the State Enterprise Worker’s Federation of Thailand met with the Labour Minister to propose problems and solutions to the impact of Covid-19 and the effects from layoffs, including workforce reductions in the workplace.
Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin chaired the meeting to discuss the labour situation at the Prof. Nikom Chandravithu meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour. Permanent Secretary of Labour, along with the ministry’s senior executives also joined the meeting. The meeting acknowledged problems, proposals, and ideas for joint solutions to the current labour situation. Participants in the meeting included the president and representatives of 15 employee organization councils and the State Enterprise Worker’s Federation of Thailand. Each organization had 3 representatives, for a total of 48 participants. Representatives of the Employee Organization Council and from the State Enterprise Worker’s Federation of Thailand presented issues and solutions to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effects of laying off workers, including workforce reductions in the workplace.
Mr. Suchart said that representatives from the Employee Organization Council and the State Enterprise Worker’s Federation of Thailand had requested to meet today, as they had suffered from the effects of Covid-19. Many workers had lost their jobs from layoffs and downsizing of the organization. He said that as the Labour Minister, he could not remain silent and that as a leader, he must listen to the problems and work together towards a resolution to ensure equality of all parties. What he is doing today is establishing the National Labout Administration Center as a driving center in all dimensions of labour. Efforts include proactively asking for vacancies from a private organization to help workers get a job and quickly return to the employment system. Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha has placed importance on driving the nation forward, in particular to accelerating the economic recovery after the Covid-19 situation eases. He has introduced the “Uniting Thailand to Build a Nation” policy with the goal of joining forces from all sectors to come together to plan and determine the future of Thailand together.
President of the Confederation of Thai Labour Mr. Panat Thai-luan, thanked the Prime Minister for assigning this minister to resolve labour issues, as he seems to be a serious, sincere, daring, and dependable. Because he is from the grassroots, he truly knows the problem of the workers. From now on, he said that he is looking forward to seeing the Labour Ministers’ accomplishments and outcomes. Initially, the workers are satisfied with the Labour Minister because he listens to the problems from the workers by himself, and not just listening to problems from the government alone. Mr. Panat said that he believes the Labour Minister will be able to resolve labour issues in all dimensions.
