On September 20, 2019, at 08.00 hours, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul, as the representative of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha and president of the government, gave a speech to commemorate His Majesty King Chulalongkorn and the importance of Thai enterprises, on the Thai State Enterprise Day. The occasion was joined by executives, civil servants and employees of the state enterprise departments and took place at the King Chulalongkorn courtyard, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority Headquarters, Prachachuen Road, Lak Si, Bangkok. The Labour Minister stated that throughout the reign of the throne for over 42 years, King Chulalongkorn “Father of Thai State Enterprise” performed royal duties that gave many benefits to the nation. He improved ministries and departments with use of new administrative systems, introduced sanitation management, local administrations, waterworks, electricity, post offices, telegraphs, telephones, communications, railways, and the establishment of various essential ministries, including the administration of the court of justice. His initiatives lead to national prosperity, equal to different civilized countries. He also mandated that state-owned enterprises operate in primary public-affairs businesses to provide benefits to the people, which is still present today.
The Labour Minister continued to say that the government has always given importance to state-owned enterprises, which are the state mechanism for driving the economy and investment into the country. It is also a public service provider for the public; therefore, it is crucial. The reform of supervision and administration of state enterprises is also required to enhance the efficiency of state enterprise operations, to have a sound governance system, be transparent and suitable for the changing economic and social context. This will lead to the environment which facilitates the provision of quality public services, including the ability to drive the country’s economy efficiently, to achieve stability, prosperity, and sustainable national development.
