On November 23, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul spoke about the case of the scaffolding collapse of a commercial building in Khlong Thom, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Bangkok. The scaffolding collapsed over workers causing severe injuries for three workers on November 22. He said that the Ministry of Labour is concerned for workers injured from work hazards. Most recently, a task force has been instructed to investigate accidents or serious occupational hazards. The task force consists of the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General, assigned by the Permanent Secretary of Labour, as the task force leader. The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s Deputy Director-General or the department’s Inspector-General appointed the Director of the Legislative Division as the task force and the Division of Labour Safety’s Director from the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare as a task force and secretariat.
The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s Director-General Mr. Apinya Sujarittanan concluded that task force to investigate accidents or serious occupational hazards has the authority to inspect the scenes when an accident or accident with serious injuries or deaths arises. The task force will then gather evidence and prosecute responsible parties, including supervisors in the hierarchy, as is deemed appropriate. The report must be reported to the Minister of Labour to acknowledge and determine the support provided to workers who suffer from accidents or hazards to receive further benefits and legal remedies.
