Labour Minister Orders Assistance for Myanmar Workers Affected in Incident at Chonburi Condominium Construction Site

            On August 16, 2020, at around 07.30 hours, an 800-kilogram cement sheets and steel scaffolding fell onto Myanmar workers causing two deaths and two to be seriously injured. The incident occurred at the construction site of a 30-story condominium in Chonburi. Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin expressed his concern and assigned the Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Todsaphon Kritwongwiman to expedite assistance to the families of the deceased and aid the injured employees to receive benefits from the Workmen’s Compensation Fund.

            The Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Todsaphon Kritwongwiman spoke about the incident. He ordered the Chonburi Social Security Officer Air Chief Marshal Supaporn Yoowattana to accelerate the investigation and provide urgent assistance. The investigation found that the condominium, Symphony Bangsaen, was located in front of Sukhumvit Road, Klong Nam Meng, Muang, and Chonburi. The employer was called I. Setting Wall and Construction Company Limited, which operates as a construction contractor and installing prefabricated wall panels. Two people were killed, Mr. Gansu, 48, and Mr. Kim Mong, 32. Two of the workers were injured, whereby Mr. Kikai. 45, suffered a spinal injury and congestion in the brain. Meanwhile, Mr. Wanyasai, 23, had a slight head injury. Bother were admitted to Burapha University Hospital.

            The Social Security Office’s Secretariat said that the employee who suffered from the said incident would receive benefits from the Workmen’s Compensation Fund as follows:
– Medical expenses on actual paid, not exceeding 50,000 Baht. If it falls within the Ministerial Regulations, the workers will receive treatment up to 1,000,000 Baht. For cases of being admitted to a public hospital treatment expenses will be covered until the end of the treatment.
– Compensation for medical treatment in case of being unable to work, at the rate of 70 percent of monthly wages for no more than one year.
– Funeral cost of 40,000 Baht.
– Compensation in the event of death, at the rate of 70 percent of monthly wages for ten years, paid to the legally eligible person.

            The Social Security Office has implemented the policy following the Labour Minister to take care of the workers’ benefits to provide protection and immediate assistance. The efforts will help build confidence in the social security system to provide services and ensure that the security for insured employees is most beneficial.
