Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul said that independent workers are the “power base” of the workforce that the Ministry of Labour is interested in and has established as a policy to provide good standard of care in order to have a higher earnings, a stable income and sufficiency to live a quality life. At the same time, the quality of life is guaranteed in the event of illness, lack of income, or in the event of a disability or death, as well as care and protection in working together safety.
The Ministry of Labour recognizes that independent workers are the “main group” of the country and that it is the ministry’s duty to make workers “powerful” and ready to move forward in the face of competition and changes, especially in technological advancement. Thus, the ministry has assigned departments under the Ministry of Labour in the area to perform their duties to the fullest potential, providing workers with a stable career, skills, higher income and social security. Section 40 of the social security system is designed to provide protection specifically for independent worker groups. In addition, it also ensures that workers are safe in the workplace by setting minimum standards suitable for working conditions, protection, welfare and benefits that are equal to workers in the system and have a better quality of life.
For the independent worker groups, agencies under the Ministry of Labour have participated in the promotion, protection, and development, including skills development training, education on labour protection laws, promotion of home workers and promotion to be an insurer under Section 40. In the area, there were villages, including Moo 9, Nong Khao, Tha Muang, Kanchanaburi, which has been successful in creating universal coverage under Section 40. This has resulted in various groups of independent workers to receive security from work, totaling an approximate 200 people.
