Labour Minister’s Secretariat Visits Chiang Rai and Promotes Elderly and Home Workers

            Secretariat to the Labour Minister visited elderly workers and work-at-home groups in Khun Tan, Chiang Rai, and viewed an exhibition on the work of self-employed professionals, strengthening skills and knowledge, creating jobs, and promoting communities with a sustainable income.

            On February 20, 2020, at 10.00 hours, Secretariat to the Labour Minister Lt. Gen. Nanthadet Meksawat visited elderly workers and work-at-home groups at the Pa Tan Subdistrict Health Center, Khun Tan, Chiang Rai. Mayor of Pa Tan District Mr. Natthaphong Wanson welcomed the visiting committee and sheriff of Khun Tan Mr. Wuttikorn Khamma gave a welcoming speech. At present, Pa Tan district has 1,682 older people, 120 of who study at the health center. The health center has various activities related to the elderly, such as the Pa Tan Subdistrict School, which has classes every Wednesday. It is a learning center for the development of the elderly care system by the community project to volunteer to the home proactively, center for the quality of life of the elderly, for example. The Ministry of Labour has the Chiang Rai Provincial Employment Office, which brought the “One District, One Wisdom” project to the area, to explore the disappearing careers or products that are lagging to develop them be modern and maintain the jobs to not be lost. The elderly participants have brought knowledge from training courses on “technique to be a speaker to transfer knowledge and wisdom” to practice. The Chiang Rai Office of Skill Development 20 has implemented a project to increase labour skills in special economic areas, with skill enhancement courses, class 12/2020, in product design from Embroidery. The training was held between January 27 – 31, 2020, at the handmade products community group, Ban Phranet, Khun Tan, Chiang Rai.

            The exhibition included display of independent workers such as making herbal medicine, yellow oil, red-eye chili paste, and pork chili paste, netting and weaving fishing equipment, pillow sewing, seat cushions sewing and bag weaving by the Ban Phranet community enterprise group, fabric product group processing into bags, sewing fabric, sewing hats, and traditional clothing sets, and the bamboo shoot processing group in time banks, waste banks and the products of elder palm forest for example.

            Chiang Rai currently has a workforce of 597,542 people. A total of 594,828 people are employed, 2,714 are unemployed, 604,992 are informal workers, 225,862 are elderly people, 39,599 are disabled, and 28,476 are foreign workers. A total of 6,411 companies are registered with social security institutions, with 140,599 insured persons, divided by 70,813 people under Section 33, 24,309 people under Section 39, and 45,477 people under Section 40.
