Content Description

On March 11, 2020, Labour Minister M.R. Chatu Mongol Sonakul, Secretariat to the Labour Minister Lt. Gen. Nanthadet Meksawat, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol, the Department of Employment’s Director-General Mr. Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul and the Ministry of Labour’s executives welcomed Mr. Michael Chong, Director of ASEAN Market, representative of Great Wall Motors (GWM), in discussions about GWM’s employment plan in Thailand.

Labour Minister M.R. Chatu Mongol Sonakul welcomed GWM’s investment in Thailand’s automotive industry and said he wished that the company has a long-term investment in the automotive market. He said that he has not been restless, and there is a concern for employees who were dismissed by General Motors (GM). The Labour Minister assigned the Department of Employment to speed up the process of supporting employment and is in close collaboration with Great Wall Motors (GWM) for hiring workers. He revealed that the discussion with GWM went well and that the company has human resource management policies according to the needs of development and production. The company will consider the transfer of former workers who have been working for a long time, to the new company, in order to quickly start operations.

The Department of Employment’s Director-General Mr. Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul spoke about General Motors or GM, the company that assembles Chevrolet vehicles, which will discontinue selling Chevrolet cars in Thailand by the end of 2020. The company sold its business to Great Wall Motors (GWM). It raised concerns that the incident may cause unemployment due to many layoffs. The Department of Employment, therefore, asked Great Wall Motors (GWM) to consider hiring former GM personnel from both the manufacturing and office site, whereby Mr. Michael Chong, said the company would consider hiring GM employees first and would forecast employment in Thailand to support GWM’s production and operations.
