Office of Labour Affair in Malaysia visits Thai workers in Sarawak

On 23-24 January, 2011, Mr. Singhadet Chu-umnat, Minister Counsellor (Labour), had joined the group to visit Kuching, Sarawak, together with Mr. Thana Duangratana, the Thai Ambassador in Kuala Lumpur as well as consulate officials in order to meet Thai workers and labour volunteer’ Sarawak network. In addition, the activities of consular in Kuching are listed below;
     1. Visit Thai workers of Global Upline Sdn. Bhd. which is the construction company and currently employs 80 Thai workers constructing the expanded areas of Kuching airport.
     2.  Meet with Mr. Chaweang Pongpudkhun, site engineer on high voltage electrical conduit pole of Sarwarja Sdn. Bhd. Company that has approximately 50 skilled workers. Additionally, this is 2-year project and will be completed within April 2011.
     3. Visit 3 Thai business owners who operate food court businesses in Kuching. Regarding the businesses, they open the stores in community spots and each booth has 2 chefs. Moreover, food court is the type of restaurant that is well-accepted by local people; therefore, it yields good profits for the businesses.
     4. Visit 3 labour volunteers in Sarawak; namely, Mrs. Aumphai Jong, Mrs. Kwanlar Sung, and Mrs. Donna Wong. These people have contributed to assist Thai workers remarkably.
     5. Assist Ms. Parnsri Sroisawa, a massage therapist of Arizona Foot Reflexology & Therapy Sdn. Bhd Company located at No. 51, 1st Floor, Tabuan Height Commercial Centre 93350 Kuching. Specifically, she is illegal worker without employment contract and work permit as well as having personal and working problems; thus, she would like to return Thailand. Therefore, Office of Labour Affairs had assisted to negotiate with the employer and consequently, she had already returned to Thailand on 28 January, 2011.
Besides, the visiting group had paid a courtesy call on Mr. Datu Robert Lian, the Director of Sarawak Immigration Office and groups of officials in order to consult on official issues and to acknowledge for the collaborative problem solving of Thai workers in Sarawak.
