Office of Labour Affairs in Singapore in cooperation with Department of Skill Development and Thai cook association in Singapore held a skill upgrading program and national skill standard test for level one Thai cook during August 15-17, 2011. A total of 59 Thai cooks attended the program and the test; 54 of whom passed the test and received a skill standard certificate for level one Thai cook. The office held the national skill standard test for level two Thai cook on August 18, 2011. A total of 17 Thai cooks attended the test; all of whom passed the test and received a skill standard certificate for level two Thai cook. All Thai cooks who pass the skill upgrading program and national skill standard test have received the skill standard certificate which they can use as skill evidences to apply for a job. On 19 August 2011, the Thai Ambassador to Singapore personally bestowed the certification to some of the Thai cooks who pass the test.

 

            M.L. Pantarig Samiti, Deputy Director of Department of Skill Development, examiners, and the department’s officials were in charge of the skill upgrading program and national skill standard tests which were held at the venue provided by the Thai cook association in Singapore.

 

            The Office of Labour Affairs in Singapore said employers/owners of Thai restaurants in Singapore are pleased with the program, noting they praise for the ministry effort in developing workers’ skills. It noted that the employers believe the program will improve Thai cook skills and is well response to a surge in the popularity of Thai food in the country, adding that it will also help reduce incentive for illegal migration of Thai cooks as they can now use the skill standard certificate to apply for work permit.  On Thai cook monthly income, It said Thai cook in Singapore receive a very high salary compared to other professions, about 1,000-3,500 Singapore dollars or some 25,000-87,500 baht per month. The 71 Thai cooks who pass the test, are expected to get work permit in Singapore and generate millions more baht annually to Thailand.
